Gregory Canyon, Range View, and Flagstaff Loop
This popular loop offers a rewarding taste of the classic Boulder foothills experience, combining a strenuous ascent with scenic, high-mountain views. Starting at the Gregory Canyon Trailhead, you'll immediately tackle a steep, rocky climb through the picturesque canyon, winding alongside the creek (Gregory Canyon Trail). This initial section requires careful footing but is well worth the effort. After reaching the saddle, the route connects to the Range View Trail, which provides the highlight of the hike: breathtaking, panoramic views of the snow-capped Indian Peaks to the west and the expansive plains to the east. The loop is completed by descending via trails like the Flagstaff Trail back towards the canyon, offering a challenging but deeply satisfying workout close to the city.

Bear Peak Via Shanahan Ridge
This route to Bear Peak's summit is one of Boulder’s most direct and challenging climbs, leading to an incredible reward. Starting gently through the Shanahan Ridge's pine forests and meadows, the trail soon transitions into the brutally steep and technical Fern Canyon Trail. The final push to the top requires a short, exhilarating scramble over large boulders to reach the 8,461-foot summit. Once there, you'll be treated to a spectacular 360-degree panorama, with the entire city of Boulder and the plains sprawling to the east, and the rugged Continental Divide dominating the western view.
